Gonna be starting a MAME cab project next week as I will have a spare empty Naomi Uni & wanted to know the following:

1: Whats the best operating system to use is 98 ok?

2: Is this (http://www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk/products/gsarcade.htm) anygood to use for controls?

3: How to auto-boot in MAME as OP.

4: PC to use (Dell Optiplex GX240 cheap on ebay) are these specs ok:
P4 1.8ghz, 512mb memory, 20gb HD, 64mb GFX card.

5: Best free front end if using more the just MAME.

Thanks

For the PC specs below - perfect!!!

2: Is this (http://www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk/products/gsarcade.htm) anygood to use for controls?

For that money I'd definitely go for an I-Pac from Ultimarc.

3: How to auto-boot in MAME as OP.

Just drop a shortcut to your emu/fe in your startup

Sould be OK to play most stuff. I'd consider doubling the memory and a much larger HDD.

AdvMenu by a long chalk.

Thanks

Thanks, but as its going up for sale straight away I'm trying to keep costs down.

I may not even do this & just sell all the parts of the Uni off in bits, but thanks for the heads up kinder gives me a idea.

Maybe if you actually posted in the forum a bit more than to poison peoples threads by catching them out.

Mate I wasn't poisoning your thread, and it isn't all about post counts you know - some people just like to read forums and see what's going on, honestly Pete your Sig states 'no consoles in cabs please' (which I and many others have) and then you start a thread about putting a PC in a cab, I thought it was ironic and decided to have a joke - obviously it back fired...maybe it's too early on a Sunday morning.

Another question, what do people do about shutting down the PC or do they just switch it off ?

If you use the IPAC then using the Ultimarc programming utility you can make a button (or shifted button) for sleep/wakeup/power or a macro combining things before it...

Does anybody in the UK sell those?

Ultimarc is in the UK mate, he's in Wimbledon...I don't know why he makes his site looks so US centric.

The Gremlin (http://www.gremlinsolutions.co.uk/products/gsarcade.htm) kit does look a bit more plug & play out of the box as all the wiring is there already.

I have looked around on the internet, but as far as I can tell, I'm the first one in the world who has used a Naomi cabinet to play MAME (contact me if this is not true)

I laughed !

whats a good spec PC for a MAME based machine then ?
to be used in a 640x480 31k compatible monitor, and one that would be okay to run the current Model 2 emulator

To run model2 i'd say P4 2.8 or above, 1gb of ram & a 256mb graphics card to boot. Should'nt cost much these days....

Hawky might have a better idea on this though as he's the model2 emu king!!

Thats a bit OTT IMO, works fine on my low end lappy, MAME is where you need high specs.

Prob gonna cost me about as much to convert to MAME as I would make in profit + all the hassle of taking it apart to get it inside & out of my house so I don't think I am going to bother tbh, but thanks for everybody's help

them specs are bob on joe, the lowest setup i tried the model 2 on was a p.4 2ghz .. 1gb ram .. GFfx 5600 256mb and it died, daytona prolly run the best out of all the games tbh, the rest was to slow.

so yeah id reckon the same as youv said above, if you want perfection then anything over a p.4/ 3ghz would be more than ok.

mame runs like a dream on a p.4 /3.4ghz 1gb ram .. with any of the upto date GF cards or current ATI cards, i know as i was using this spec on mame, even the 3d games like tekken work good.

pete im a bit confused though, you say the model 2 emu runs good on your low end lappy, whats the spec ?

iv tried the model 2 emu on most of the machines here and it dragged its arse on a p.4/2ghz ..1gb ram ........... actually remembering back i did try it on a p.4/1800 mhz and it snuffed it.
