Thing I want next is an iMac... though I'll probably wait until the new year now before I get one... just won't have the time to tinker between now and Christmas. I'm still not entirely sold on the new design, I still like the previous all white models better.

I just want a bigger screen to work on the next mag with, my eyes get so strained when working on a small 12" screen. Or at least have a bit more work space when working with video.

Maybe they'll update the machine with better specifications come early next year too. :burgerking:

Haha, yeah I'm not particularly proud of it but I got it for free (02 reg, 28k on the clock) and it's fine as a first car. There's not much point in buying a car with a 2 litre engine and paying through the roof for insurance. Even at 29 insurance when you first pass your test is still expensive. The strange thing was when I put my folks on as named drivers it took my insurance quote down by about £200, bonus. :slug3:

tel

I don't think he qualifies either, although he does have some flashy shirts. He thinks that most people on TV these days are complete idiots and hates reality TV, which is a good anti-chav sign. There are plenty of chavs close by though, our part of the world is a chav hotspot.

It's worth it to keep the mileage down in the mans car then, 650 miles a week = yoo lose value fast. I have a 40 mile round trip which is bad enough, the roads near me aren't the best.

my Silvia is pretty much a weekend/thursday evening car, with the odd nissan owners club meet.

in an ideal world if petrol wasn't so expensive as a daily run around i'd like something like a Honda Accord Estate (the new-ish one) or a Galant Estate (the Japanese Legnum VR4 would be even better, but if its anything like the Evo it would need to be serviced waaaaaaaaaay too often)

I was due to get my Dad's S reg Clio if/when I past my test, but tbh after a quick go driving out of my car park the other day I' don't think I want it, the clutch is way too heavy & I barley fit in the cockpit, which also makes getting in/out harder than I thought, unlike the new shape Corsa (1.4 Twinport 04 plate) that I'm learning to drive in, which strangely looks smaller from the outside

This new 6 points for speeding that was on the news today is a joke though :sad3:

It makes sense. The 6 points will only be for people way over the limit, and anyone doing 45 in a 30 zone should have a bigger penalty. If they have smaller penalties for being only slightly over the limit then it will really make sense

I don't like the whole 6 points in your first two years of driving = lose your license though.

I've been thinking about getting a Slingbox for quite a while, but have yet to take the plunge. I dont suppose anyone here has one??

A Slingbox is a device that you can play your satellite receiver into, or your DVD player or any video source i suppose and with the software supplied, you can watch and control these appliances over the internet.

http://www.slingmedia.com/

Okay, it's not that I get desperate to watch UK TV when I am away from home, but the it can be useful to check on UK news when i'm abroad and i can't access BBC or SKY news or instance. But i also have the idea of standing a camera on a tripod in front of my fish tank so i know they are alright and being fed by the auto feeder. If there's anything wrong, I can call someone and they can come round and sort it out...

I'm not 100% that the slingbox will support this kinda thing, I guess i'll have to go investigate. Also, if i can give out my password or something to my friends & family abroad, then they can watch UK TV too, especially when I am at work during the day and they can watch some GMTV or something.

vib_ribbon
20-11-2007, 03:36 PM
just had a text chat with the people at sling... ah... it does what i need it to do. basically, anything with the typical video out/ composite/ s-video, then you can plug it straight in. max resolution is 640x480. i can lend the password to a friend/ family abroad and they can use it too (but only 1 person can connect at a time).

Mr-Megalo
20-11-2007, 03:54 PM
how does it work, do you simply plug the av out into the sling box, and it transmits via sattelite or something ?
how would you change channels on say, something like sky?

vib_ribbon

you hook up your network cable to it and it goes over the internet.

i guess you can sync your remote to it and by doing so, you can upload information to the slingbox remotely and it will trigger the infra red info to change the channel of your tv or satellite etc.

Mr-Megalo
20-11-2007, 04:27 PM
hmm, so i could watch, say sky TV in a carPC while sat on a motorway service station aslong as I am connected to the intenet (even if its wireless) ?

vib_ribbon
20-11-2007, 04:42 PM
if your pc runs windowsxp, vista or OSX yes.

http://www.slingmedia.com/go/faq

i also wanna do stuff like, watch TV together with a friend from the far east or in america/ canada, I'll watch it as it is on TV and they can watch it on their PC.

dj_johnnyg
21-11-2007, 04:39 AM
Hmm,

You could send me your password to test it. I'm about as far away as you can get, and NZ TV is shite.

@Meg - The Car PC seems to be well spec'd, but hella expensive if you've got to add HDD, CD, RAM & OS.

Still would be Pimp.

I've got a 2DIN space in the Celica, maybe I should buy one & increase the value of the car to £800!!

Oh, How much is a shipping container??? I may be able to get a Legnum over to you.

Mr-Megalo
21-11-2007, 07:42 PM
yes the carPC would cost about a grand all in, but its not one of those shite screens, its got one thats made by sharp, i've seen some of those cheap double din DVD/MP3 players, the screen is crap during the daytime.

RE: a Legnum, would be easier for me to get one in UK-land TBH, theres quite a few in the UK, and theres quite a few importers that can do you a good condition one for about £3500 - £4000 with low milage and all MOT'd etc, not that i'm looking to buy one now, but I almost bought one, couldn't fit it on my driveway though, they are quite lengthy car's.

Hello Ducky!

Non-Turbo for me, but then I'm not sure the car would take one. A superb 1987 model with over 200,000KM on the clock.

Only £300, and if I'm only here another 9 months, I may as well spend the money on beer & porn. Plus the speed limits only 60mph on the motorway and 30 everywhere else, so not a lot of point really.

I'm beginning to appreciate the Jap cars from the early 90's more than the newer "super carz". Even when the current crop on Evo X's are old I don't think I'll ever be able to run one.

one step closer to owning one of these now, I met with the UK distributors of these (the guys who actually supply them to kustomPC's) at the Birmingham NEC yesterday and spent a good half an hour chatting with them about what other things it is capable of doing - have also gotten a couple of quotes off of them today via e-mail.

probably going to go for a barebones unit, slap 2GB ram and a 250GB hard drive in it.
just pains me that the front end software for it which is called Centrafuse XLE is $349 !

Kawaks and Nebula should play fine as should the CPS3 emu, and as there is a USB slot in the front of the unit, can plug in fingerprint reader to logon, unplug that then plug joystick/control pad in if I did play any games.
handy thing is it can actually output to a 2nd and 3rd VGA monitor aswell, so I could fit another screen aswell if needs be (doubt I will though but who knows)

another feature I am looking into is if it will work with the car's ECU and display "Virtaul" gauges for oil temp/water temp etc aswell as being used in conjunction with Nissan Datascan software and a consult cable for other car related tomfoolery.

Mr-Megalo

2 rear USB, 1 front USB
probably going to have to grab a USB hub and power that from one of the car's 12v lines, but as it stands, i'll need 1 USB socket for bluetooth, one for wireless internet, and the front one can be hot swappable between keyboard/joystick/memory stick

the screen is touch screen so no real need for a seperate mouse, however i'll probably be using a keyboard with an integrated mouse or touchpad should the need for a mouse ever arise

I was given needles, thing is I seem to have a strange tollerance to anesthetics, always have done, so first needle that was s'posed to make me go numb, didn't work, second needle, slightly numb 3 rd needle got me there, but I then needed another 2 so he could pull the tooth.

after waiting in the waiting room for 5 minutes for the numbness to kick in, it was over and done with in 10 minutes, I will say this though, I wasn't s'posed to be able to feel it when the tooth was actually pulled . . . I felt it, but it was the same when I had a small operation on my back a few years ago, I could feel that too

Depends on the individual. If they are impacted wisdom teeth (i.e. coming through at an angle) then the best option is hospital under general, rather than local with the foot of the dentist imprinted on your chest.

You should have an x-ray before hand to establish if they are impacted or it's a straight stab and pull job...

I had all four out about 10 years or so ago...bottom two impacted, upper two okay...the best part was the two weeks off work.

Slightly worried when I eventually surfaced after the anaesthetic, back on the ward - guy next to me had the same operation the week before - hooked up to an antibiotic drip, and his mouth looked like someone had inserted a food blender into it...

yea I had X-Ray to see what sort of state it was in before they sent me off to the waiting room for the numbness to kick in, which it didn't so I had more needles

my gums are hurting today, me love you long time mr codeine

Got my new ICE system on Sat like this:

Sounds a lot better than the factory Phillips unit.

right so i've been outside most of the day cleaning and polishing the car, tidiying up some wiring and sorting out my boost gauge which works again now, I'd forgot to fasten the ground wire

anyways some quick pics of this, please bare in mind I've had little to no time to do much with this so i'm only running the Infil front end software at the moment, and I haven't as yet installed my GPS receiver, so far i've sorted out a lot of MP3's to go on the hard drive and transfered them over and done a bit of tinkering, changed Windows XP bootskin to a nice Nissan logo, used style XP to give me a black Windows shell and got a black Logon screen, but as yet not changed my logon picture  this will also probably be Nissan, or maybe Datsun who knows

http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/9504/nissancarpc4vh4.jpg

things left to do, grab a consult cable to connect the PC to my ECU, grab some software for the same reason, decide on which front end software I want to use for the time being but most importantly grab another stereo cage to butcher, I want to sit this further back into the dash so I can put a faceplate over the front of it at night or when i'm not in the car and its parked up somewhere, its quite obvious its there at the moment, and while most would just thing its a double din stereo I dont want to leave any temptation for some coooont to nick it, if I drop it further back, I plan to have a faceplate to sit over the front of it with the original Nissan cassete player front on it

I want this, saw one in the foray area of Vauxhall HQ this afternoon...

So Meg does your car PC have Sat Nav too? these 2 din Kenwood units are meant to be ok:

But around £670!

yea satnav / GPS stuff can be done via the carpc.
I know someone who has one of those kenwood jobbies, I was looking at them myself - its how I discovered the Infil actually as I was looking for double din screens that had VGA input for PC's

only Vauxhall i'd ever consider is the Monaro

decided i'm going to remove this from the car for awhile till I can sit it further into the dash and make a fake plate for it and also to bring into in to fine tune it.
really dont like this standard front end software that comes with it.

Drove a 08 plate Ford Focas 1.6 Style (1600 miles on the clock) last night as my mate was too drunk to do so all the way back from Saffron Walden, roughly 60 miles back to where I live.

Smooth, but a little light & fluffy.

your kidding me, my mk2 focus is hardly what i would describe as light and fluffy, infact the 1.6 Zetec Climate is a right heavy old bird (autobox doesn't help either)

Mk1 Focus was really nippy and loved to be thrown round corners and the 1.6 Zetec in that (which is the same as the one in my Mk2 Focus) was great - I can't help but think the Mk2 Focus is a little on the heavy side, and should be a 1.8 engine, its not as fun to drive, its not as plucky oh and the MPG isn't as good either.

I actually saw one of these out in Potters Bar (just up the road from me) yesterday.

Vectra replacement looks nice too, Insignia.
